Citizens risk jail term for failing to assist Police Officers

The Nigeria Police Force has cautioned citizens about the legal consequences of failing to assist officers in danger of being assaulted

Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that individuals who neglect to help officers under attack could face a fine of N100,000 or a three-month jail term, as outlined in Section 99 of the Police Act 2020.

Adejobi also highlighted Section 197 of the Criminal Code Act, which prescribes a two-year imprisonment for resisting a police officer during the performance of their duties.

In a post shared on X, Adejobi referenced Section 42 of the Police Act 2020, which obligates Nigerians to assist judges, magistrates, police officers, or others lawfully seeking help in arresting or preventing the escape of a suspect.
