Miguel Masaisai’s journey across Africa has ended in tragedy.
The 23-year-old cyclist from Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, was travelling towards Morocco as part of a long-distance ride called “Pedals for Peace”.
He set out on May 1, hoping to cover roughly 14,000 kilometres and pass through 17 African countries.
Masaisai had already made it as far as Kinshasa, covering more than 6,500 kilometres, before continuing his journey through Congo-Brazzaville.
On September 18, his bicycle reportedly developed a mechanical problem near Ouesso, not far from the Congo-Cameroon border. He got into a taxi so he could have the bicycle taken for repairs.
The taxi was later involved in a collision with a truck. Masaisai was among four people who d!ed in the crash. The taxi driver and two other passengers were also k!lled.
Masaisai had already completed another major cycling challenge the year before, riding from Goma all the way to Cape Town in South Africa.
His journey was intended to use cycling as a way of promoting peace across the continent, but he died before he could reach Morocco.
