The couple’s website had announced their upcoming nuptials, but their plans were shattered when authorities apprehended them for their role in defrauding elderly Americans of over $3 million.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Texas, Akporugo and Sood conspired for over seven years to build relationships with widowed victims on social media and dating platforms, gaining their trust before persuading them to transfer substantial amounts of money to accounts under their control.

The indictment accuses the couple of defrauding at least 13 victims of $3,123,073 between 2015 and 2022. Akporugo faces additional charges of aggravated identity theft and fraud related to access devices.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the wedding plans have been abandoned, and the couple’s future remains uncertain amidst the allegations of fraud.

A notice of forfeiture has been issued for all proceeds acquired unlawfully through the fraudulent scheme. U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani highlighted the severity of their alleged crimes, emphasizing the devastating impact on vulnerable victims.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of online fraud and the importance of vigilance in protecting oneself from such schemes.
