Justice James Omotosho issued the order on Tuesday after Mrs. Kanu admitted to the act and apologized. Her phone had been confiscated during a previous sitting when she was caught recording the session. However, the video later appeared online, prompting concern from the court.

“I want to hear from her. Were you not the one who took your phone?” the judge asked, visibly displeased. “I don’t know if she might be a wife to my brother (Nnamdi Kanu),” he added, to which Prince Kanu clarified, “She is my wife.”

Despite an apology from lead defence counsel Kanu Agabi (SAN), Justice Omotosho ruled that Mrs. Kanu must be sanctioned to serve as a deterrent to others. “She would have been charged for contempt,” he said, before imposing the three-hearing ban.

The judge emphasized the court’s commitment to a fair and timely trial, warning that any actions disrupting proceedings or undermining the judiciary would not be tolerated.

Nnamdi Kanu is currently facing terrorism-related charges filed by the Federal Government. His trial has experienced several delays since his re-arrest and extradition from Kenya in 2021.
