Court returns passport of Omoyele Sowore

The Omoyele Sowore has had his international passport returned following the dismissal of cybercrime charges brought against him by the Nigeria Police Force on behalf of former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun

The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Musa Liman, struck out the case on Tuesday after Sowore’s legal team argued that the prosecution had failed to actively pursue the matter since his arraignment in January 2025.

The charges stemmed from Sowore’s social media posts in which he referred to Egbetokun as the “illegal IGP,” allegations the police described as cyberbullying and incitement.

With the case dismissed, the court ordered the immediate release of Sowore’s passport, which had been seized as part of his bail conditions for more than a year. His lawyers collected the document following the ruling.

Reacting to the decision, Sowore hailed it as a triumph over what he called a politically motivated and unjust prosecution, noting that he had persistently demanded the return of his passport.
