A Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, to death by hanging for the murder of 22-year-old fashion designer, Oluwabamise Ayanwola

Justice Sherifat Sonaike delivered the judgment on Friday, declaring that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court found Ominikoron guilty of multiple charges, including murder and attempted rape.
“For the death of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy upon your soul,” the judge declared.
The tragic incident occurred on February 26, 2022, when Bamise boarded a BRT bus driven by Ominikoron in Lekki. She went missing shortly after, and her body was found days later on Carter Bridge, prompting national outrage and raising serious concerns over commuter safety in Lagos.
During the trial, another victim also testified that Ominikoron raped her in November 2021 inside a BRT bus. While the court ruled there was insufficient evidence to convict him of rape in Bamise’s case, he was found guilty of attempted rape based on corroborating testimony and circumstantial evidence.
The verdict marks a significant step toward justice for Bamise and her family, while also drawing attention to the urgent need for improved safety measures in public transportation systems.
