Comptroller James Ojo, the Controller of the Ogun Area 1 Command, disclosed this during a media briefing on Friday, where the contraband was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Describing the surge in drug smuggling as a severe threat to national security, Ojo expressed concern over the alarming trend. “The scale of illicit drug smuggling in recent times is alarming and worrisome,” he remarked.

The seizures, made at various strategic locations across Ogun State, highlight the growing challenge of drug trafficking in Nigeria. According to Ojo, the contraband included:
5,256 coconut-sized wraps of cannabis sativa, valued at ₦46,981,742
46 book-sized wraps of cannabis sativa, valued at ₦411,179

In total, the confiscated items comprised 403 sacks and 6,504 parcels of cannabis sativa, weighing 7,217.7 kg, along with 362 packs of Tramaking tablets (225mg each). These were intercepted at hotspots such as the Agbawo/Iganokoto area in Yewa North and Imeko Afon Local Government Areas.
Ojo emphasized the Command’s dedication to curbing drug smuggling, noting that between January and November 21, 2024, the operatives intercepted large quantities of illegal substances through strategic operations and credible intelligence.
“Between October 13 and November 12, 2024, our operatives intercepted 1,373 parcels of cannabis sativa (weighing 1,337 kg) and 362 packs of Tramaking tablets (225mg each), abandoned in locations like the Abeokuta axis, Agbawo/Iganokoto, and Imeko Afon,” Ojo detailed.
He praised his officers for their commitment and courage, warning drug traffickers to desist or face strict legal consequences.
Receiving the seized contraband, Olusegun Adeyeye, Commander of the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command, lauded the Customs Command for its tireless efforts in combating drug smuggling.
“This seizure is a testament to the synergy between the NDLEA and Customs in addressing the menace of drug abuse and smuggling,” Adeyeye stated, highlighting the importance of collaboration in safeguarding Nigeria’s youth, families, and communities.
