Dele Momodu backs Atiku as ADC best choice for 2027

Veteran journalist Dele Momodu has revealed why he believes former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar should emerge as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Momodu said Atiku has the numbers and represents a formidable challenge to President Bola Tinubu.

He noted that Atiku’s consistent investments in education and agriculture, along with his business acumen, make him a strong example of the kind of leader Nigeria needs.

“I said the best choice would be my candidate—which is what I expect the Obidients to say, and those supporting Rotimi Amaechi too. There’s nothing wrong with that,” Momodu said.

He emphasized that politics is ultimately a numbers game, and that Atiku’s strength lies in his broad support base—particularly in northern Nigeria.

“The people who are most aggrieved today are from the North. And if you listen carefully to Wike, they are pushing for a southern presidency, but they know there’s no Southerner right now with that kind of reach. The only one who could have tried is Wike himself, but he’s already with Tinubu,” he added.

Momodu suggested that the intensity of attacks against Atiku shows how much of a threat he poses. “The moment you see people waging a campaign of calumny against Atiku, you must know he’s a threat. Even my brother, Daniel Bwala, was appealing to Atiku recently to join their team.”

He praised Atiku’s long-standing commitment to his presidential ambition, dating back to 1993, and his independence from state governors and political thuggery.

“He’s been running his businesses, investing in education and agriculture—no thugs in front of his house. That, for me, is the mark of a true leader,” Momodu stated.

He also expressed admiration for Peter Obi, calling him a “very good friend” and a worthy leader for the coalition.

“As a democrat, I hope the coalition allows a fair and democratic process. Let the Obidients campaign for Obi, let Atiku’s supporters do the same, and those backing Amaechi too. That’s how it should be.”

Momodu concluded by expressing optimism about the readiness of the coalition, saying, “I’m happy the coalition is fully ready and prepared.”
