Doris Ogala pledges to seecure Nnamdi Kanu’s release if elected Abia Governor

Actress and African Action Congress (AAC) governorship candidate in Abia State, Doris Ogala, has pledged to pursue the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, if elected governor in the 2027 governorship election.

Ogala made the pledge while outlining what she would prioritise if elected to lead the state, saying Kanu’s release would be her first major move as governor.

In a post, she said:

“If Abia State votes for me as their next governor in 2027, the first thing I will do is secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

Ogala is seeking to unseat incumbent Governor Alex Otti in the 2027 governorship election on the platform of the AAC. Otti, who came to power in 2023, is expected to seek a second term, setting the stage for another competitive race for the Abia Government House.

Her pledge to pursue Kanu’s release is likely to feature prominently in her campaign as the election approaches, particularly given the strong interest the IPOB leader’s case continues to attract across Abia and the wider South-East.

Kanu, who hails from Abia State, has been in detention over charges arising from his agitation for the independence of Biafra. His continued detention has generated calls from supporters, groups and some political figures for his release.

Ogala’s position introduces Kanu’s case into the growing political contest in Abia ahead of the 2027 election, with the AAC candidate positioning herself as one of the challengers to Otti’s bid for another term.
