EFCC arrests former NHIS secretary, Prof. Usman Yusuf in Abuja

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have raided the Abuja residence of former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Usman Yusuf, and taken him into custody

The gun-wielding operatives arrested the professor of haematology-oncology and bone marrow transplantation at about 4:46 p.m. on Wednesday in the presence of his wife and children.

Sources revealed that Yusuf was driven to an undisclosed location, though the exact reason for his arrest remains unknown. However, it is believed to be linked to his tenure at NHIS.

“The reason for his arrest can’t be made public yet as investigations are ongoing. He is in custody and will assist detectives in their investigations,” a highly placed source said.

Yusuf was dismissed in 2019 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, seven months after a fact-finding panel recommended his removal over the alleged mismanagement of N919 million.

EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale said he would verify the development but had yet to provide further details at the time of filing this report.
