EFCC grills Sujimoto over fraud case

The Chief Executive Officer of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited, Sijibomi Ogundele, has been interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged N5.7 billion contract fraud involving the Enugu State Government

Ogundele, who surrendered after being declared wanted, was questioned for more than 10 hours on Monday, with indications that he could be detained as investigations continue.

According to EFCC sources, all personal and corporate accounts linked to him have been frozen, while his international passport has been seized to restrict his movement.

“The Chief Executive Officer of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited has surrendered to our commission and we immediately took him into custody. For more than 10 hours, we have been questioning him based on the petition of the Enugu State Government. We have frozen all his accounts and that of his company pending the conclusion of preliminary investigation. We will also seize his passport to restrict his movement to the country,” an EFCC source revealed.

The case stems from a contract reportedly valued at over N11 billion, awarded by the Enugu State Government. While 30 per cent of the contract sum was initially approved, Ogundele allegedly requested 50 per cent — about N5.7 billion — on the assurance of early completion.

The government, however, claims the work done was worth no more than N750 million, alleging that the contractor abandoned the project despite repeated calls to resume. This prompted a petition to the EFCC.

Investigators, alongside Enugu State officials, had inspected the site before summoning Ogundele. When he failed to appear, he was declared wanted.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed: “Our investigators are still grilling him.”

Last week, Ogundele vowed to clear his name, maintaining that he would defend himself against the allegations.
