Senegalese-American artist Akon has stirred controversy with remarks suggesting that Elon Musk is championing the cause of white South Africans, whom he claims are now worse off than their Black counterparts

Speaking on a recent episode of the American podcast Bagfuel Brigade, Akon suggested that Musk’s interest in South African issues stems from what he sees as a reversal of racial fortunes in the country.

According to Akon, “In South Africa, white people don’t have it as good as white people have in America. South Africa is probably the one place in Africa that was able to switch the table where the white folks live in the hood and the black people are living good.

This is why Elon Musk is fighting for those white folks in South Africa. He feels like they are being mistreated and there is no equality. White folks are fighting for equality in South Africa because Blacks are the majority. Blacks in South Africa are united. If all the other [African] countries do that, we will be the superpower of the universe.”

Elon Musk, who spent his early life in South Africa, has repeatedly criticized the country’s land policies. Earlier this year, he condemned what he described as “racist ownership laws” and accused the South African government of neglecting the alleged mistreatment of white farmers.

His comments came after President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Expropriation Act into law in January, allowing for land seizures—sometimes without compensation—when deemed necessary for public interest or redistribution.

However, Akon’s claims clash with established socioeconomic data. As of 2022, World Bank statistics show that white workers in South Africa earn nearly three times more than their Black counterparts on average. Furthermore, despite the dismantling of apartheid three decades ago, white farmers continue to hold about 75% of South Africa’s agricultural land, though they make up only 7% of the population.
