An aircraft arriving from Enugu ran off the runway after touching down at Benin Airport on Thursday during heavy downpour. Thankfully, no one was hurt
The incident first raised fears of a crash, but the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) said the plane had actually landed safely before sliding off the runway because of bad weather.
Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, debunked claims that the aircraft crashed.
According to him, it was a “runway excursion” triggered by the torrential rain, not an accident.
“The aircraft landed safely but skidded off the runway due to the adverse weather conditions,” he stated.
All passengers and crew were confirmed safe, with no injuries or fatalities recorded.
A video showed passengers disembarking from the plane after it veered into a swampy area beside the runway.
Attempts to get a response from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) were unsuccessful. FAAN’s Managing Director/CEO, Mrs. Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku, did not answer calls to her phone as of press time.
