A member of the United Methodist Church (UMC) has shared the heartbreaking details of how popular evangelist Norest Nyakudanga suddenly collapsed and passed away while delivering a sermon in Highlands on Tuesday night
The sermon, which was also livestreamed on Facebook, ended in tragedy
Norest Nyakudanga, a 65-year-old evangelist from St. Peters Chitungwiza, was preaching as the guest speaker at the End of Year Revival gathering held at the Chisipite UMC assembly. According to the eyewitness, the evening seemed like any other, with Evangelist Nyakudanga showing no signs of illness before the incident.
A woman recounted the evening’s events in a WhatsApp message, describing how Nyakudanga was full of energy and joy that night. She said the evangelist even danced and sang with the congregation before beginning his sermon.
During his sermon, Evangelist Nyakudanga raised concerns about the negative and divisive messages that he felt were overshadowing the church’s mission. He urged the congregation to focus on spreading powerful, uplifting messages that praise the Lord.
However, as he continued delivering his sermon, something was wrong. Witnesses say Nyakudanga tried to steady himself at the pulpit before suddenly collapsing. It is believed he may have passed away even before hitting the ground.
Several nurses in the congregation rushed to the evangelist’s aid, but despite their best efforts, they soon informed the rest of the church that they had lost their beloved leader.
Chitungwiza-Marondera MUMC chairman Rangarirai Nyahodza expressed his sorrow over the loss of a man he described as dedicated, humble, and a true servant of God. He praised Nyakudanga for being a leader who led by example and for his unwavering commitment to spreading the gospel.
He also revealed that Nyakudanga had been experiencing side pains but chose to preach through the discomfort.
Mourners have gathered at the evangelist’s home in Zengeza 5 Extension. Evangelist Norest Nyakudanga will be laid to rest on Friday at Donzwe Village in Mutoko.
