Nigeria’s U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Santiago, Chile, bringing their tournament run to an end
Argentina drew first blood in the 2nd minute through Alejo Sarco, immediately putting Nigeria on the back foot.
Maher Carrizo added a second goal in the 35th minute, giving the Albiceleste a 2-0 lead at halftime. Argentina dominated the second half as well, scoring two more goals to seal a comprehensive 4-0 victory.
The Flying Eagles had qualified for the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams after a draw with Colombia and wins over Saudi Arabia and Italy in the group stage. Despite their promising run, Nigeria struggled to match Argentina’s intensity and defensive organization.
While the result was disappointing, the tournament highlighted Nigeria’s young talents and resilience on the global stage. The experience gained will be crucial as the team prepares for future competitions.
