Comedian Bovi Ugboma has come under fire after a video from one of his recent shows surfaced online, showing him calling for the release of former politician Ike Ekweremadu.
In the clip, Bovi questions the severity of Ekweremadu’s crime, asking the audience, “was he forced?”, a comment that many perceived as downplaying the former lawmaker’s conviction.

The remark sparked immediate backlash. One attendee wrote on X, “Had to leave Bovi’s show when he started appealing for the release of Ike Ekweremadu. He just ruined the entire show with that lousy moment.”
Other viewers supported the decision to walk out, criticizing Bovi for using his platform to defend someone convicted of serious crimes.
Some social media users suggested that Bovi’s plea may have been influenced by Ekweremadu’s financial support, with one saying, “I know the Ekweremadus may be his biggest donors, but that’s a horrible thing to do.”
Another person vented frustration over the incident, writing: “I remember saying how much I hated stand‑up comedy because it is always one mess with them. Today, it is Bovi asking his audience to plead for the release of Ike Ekweremadu.”

The controversy comes against the backdrop of Ekweremadu’s conviction in the United Kingdom for his role in a human organ trafficking case, which drew widespread condemnation and remains a sensitive subject in Nigeria.
