Fela: VDM criticizes Wizkid over feud with Seun Kuti

VeryDarkMan criticizes Wizkid for coming for Fela amid the ongoing feud with Seun Kuti, saying the superstar should have addressed Seun directly instead of invoking his legendary father’s name

He said, “Nigeria is the only country without music legends. While other countries idolize theirs, in Nigeria, they call it ‘past glory.’ I even expected Wizkid to call out Seun Kuti directly, without mentioning his father, Fela.”

VeryDarkMan also questioned the significance of Wizkid’s Grammy win and his understanding of music as an art. “Because of Wizkid, people disrespect Fela. Let’s go further — talking about Grammy. This 2026, Fela will be given a lifetime achievement award at the Grammys after being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2025. Did Wizkid ever get a lifetime achievement award? Never. Which song? Which piece of music? When it comes to music as an art, involving drumming and sounds, Wizkid can’t even play an instrument. He can’t even match Made Kuti. Music has an art, and because people don’t respect your legends, that’s why you use Fela’s name.”

He added, “Take a good look at Wizkid’s Grammy — Best Music Video. This is not even a real Grammy; I call it a compensation Grammy. Cry all you want, it is what it is. Now, let’s talk about Nigerians who actually have Grammys. Burna Boy won Best Global Music Album twice, no one else involved. Tems won Best African Music Performance and also collaborated with Future and Drake. Yet people disrespect Fela, saying he was irresponsible. I don’t see any of us matching that level of artistry.”

VeryDarkMan’s comments highlight what he sees as a larger problem in Nigeria: a failure to respect and protect the legacy of its music legends, which allows contemporary stars to leverage legendary names rather than honor their true artistry.
