The vessel, which was overloaded and unauthorized to carry passengers, tragically sank while carrying 130 people from Lunga in Nampula province to Mozambique Island, as reported by Lourenco Machado, an INSTRASMAR administrator, on state television.

Reports suggest the boat was struck by a tidal wave, compounding the disaster. Passengers were reportedly fleeing a cholera outbreak, compounding the tragedy.

Jaime Neto, secretary of state for Nampula province, expressed the boat’s overcrowding and unsuitability for passengers as contributing factors to the sinking, noting the significant loss of children’s lives.

Social media footage showing numerous bodies on a beach and individuals carrying children’s remains underscores the magnitude of the catastrophe, although Reuters has not independently verified the videos.
