The directive was issued by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) during a safety awareness campaign held in Lagos. The event was held in collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Petroleum Tanker Drivers arm of NUPENG, the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other safety agencies.

According to the NMDPRA, the measure is aimed at reducing road crashes and fatal explosions often caused by the movement of petroleum-laden trucks at night. Tanker drivers found violating the new regulation will face severe penalties.

The authority also revealed that it has begun enforcing a new rule that limits the volume of fuel a tanker is allowed to carry, in a further bid to enhance road safety across the country.
