The Nigerian government has launched a program to sell 50kg bags of rice at a reduced price of ₦40,000 to public servants in Abuja.
This move aims to help ease the ongoing food crisis affecting the country.
Jaiyesimi Abimbola, Director of Human Resource Management at the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, announced this initiative in a circular dated August 1.
To participate, interested public servants must complete an online form on the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) website. After printing the form, they need to submit it to their Director of Human Resources for approval.
The process of payment and distribution will be overseen by designated officials. To ensure transparency, the Chairman of the Joint Union Council of the Ministry will observe the proceedings.
The program allows each staff member to purchase one bag of rice. However, recognizing that some may find even the subsidized price challenging, the circular states that multiple employees can pool their resources to buy and share a single bag.
This initiative represents an effort by the government to provide some relief to its employees during a period of food insecurity and rising prices.
