Responding to the allegation, the Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Major General Adamu Laka, assured Nigerians that there is no new terrorist threat in the country.
“There is no new terrorist group in Nigeria. There’s no need to panic,” he said.

The denial follows remarks made by Turkey’s Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, during an event in Abuja on Tuesday evening to mark Turkey’s Democracy and National Unity Day. Poroy alleged that FETO is still active in Nigeria, particularly in education and healthcare sectors.
“The presence of such an organisation poses a threat to every country in which it operates. Unfortunately, the FETO terrorist organisation still maintains its activities in Nigeria… We consistently inform our Nigerian friends about the nature and dangers of this organisation and urge them to remain vigilant and cautious,” he stated.

FETO is linked to the late Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen, who died in 2024 at age 83. Once an ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Gulen was accused of masterminding a failed coup in 2016 — a charge he denied. He was later convicted in absentia, and his global network of schools and organisations was designated a terrorist group by the Turkish government.

Though Gulen-affiliated institutions are said to operate in more than 160 countries, including Nigeria, there is no public evidence connecting them to any form of terrorism within Nigerian territory.
