The Federal Government has started selling 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice to Nigerians at a subsidized rate of N40,000 per 50-kilogramme bag
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, launched the initiative in Abuja, stating it would be implemented nationwide.
Kyari described the timing as opportune, given the current challenges facing the nation.
He attributed the initiative to President Bola Tinubu’s directive to ensure Nigerians have access to food.
Kyari noted that global food prices have been affected by COVID-19, the Russian-Ukraine war, and climate change, and Nigeria is no exception.
To address potential challenges, a multi-disciplinary government team has been deployed to ensure transparency and success.
The rice purchase process involves verifying beneficiaries using identification mediums like NIN and phone numbers. One person can buy one 50kg bag of rice.
