FG recovers N277Bn, $967.5m in cash and assets in 2024

The Federal Government has announced that a total of N277 billion and $967.5 million in cash and assets were recovered in 2024 by Nigeria’s top anti-corruption agencies

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), made the disclosure on Tuesday at the Asset Recovery Summit held in Abuja. The event, organized by the Ministry of Justice, also marked the official launch of the National Central Database of Forfeited Assets.

Fagbemi revealed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was responsible for the bulk of the recoveries, with over N248 billion, $105 million, and 753 duplexes reclaimed. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) recovered N29.685 billion and assets worth $966,900.

He also noted that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had stepped up its efforts in seizing assets linked to drug trafficking, to prevent criminal proceeds from fueling further illegal activities.

“Asset recovery is a cornerstone in our ongoing battle against corruption, economic crimes, and illicit financial flows,” Fagbemi said. “It serves not only as a deterrent but also helps to strip criminals of the benefits of their unlawful acts.”

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and rule of law, adding that effective asset recovery and management were essential to rebuilding public trust and driving economic development.

The minister also mentioned ongoing efforts to repatriate looted funds from overseas, describing it as part of Nigeria’s push toward greater financial integrity.

President Bola Tinubu, represented at the summit by Nadungu Gagare, Permanent Secretary for Policies and Economic Affairs at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, emphasized the need to leverage digital tools for efficient tracking and recovery of stolen assets.
