The Federal Government has officially fixed the minimum entry age for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria at 16 years

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made this known on Tuesday while declaring open the 2025 Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja.
He emphasized that the age limit is non-negotiable and must be strictly adhered to by all institutions.
“The official age for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria is 16. This is not up for debate,” Alausa stated.
The minister also issued a stern warning that any admission process carried out outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) would be considered illegal, with institutions and individuals involved risking prosecution.
He added that any head of institution found to be involved in admission racketeering or bypassing CAPS would face legal consequences.
