A devastating fire broke out early Thursday, January 1, 2026, destroying a large section of Ikotun Market in Lagos and leaving traders counting losses estimated to run into millions of naira
The blaze reportedly started around 12:05 a.m., just minutes after the New Year began.
Eyewitnesses said the fire spread rapidly, engulfing shops and goods before emergency responders could bring it under control.
A distraught resident described the scene as heartbreaking, saying the market was “burnt to ashes,” and many traders lost their livelihoods within hours.
