Heavy rains in Tanzania over the past two weeks have led to devastating floods, resulting in the loss of at least 58 lives, according to the government. The coastal region has been particularly hard hit, affecting over 126,000 people.
Government spokesperson Mobhare Matinyi announced on Sunday that aid, including food, has been provided to those affected by the floods. To prevent future flooding, Tanzania plans to build 14 dams.
Neighboring Kenya is also grappling with heavy rains, with reports of flooding causing the deaths of at least 13 people. The floods have damaged infrastructure, prompting authorities to advise people in flood-prone areas to relocate.
The rainy season is expected to peak by the end of this month, raising concerns about further damage and loss of life.
