Markus Jooste, the former CEO of Steinhoff, was found unresponsive after authorities notified him of an impending arrest, leading to speculation of a suicide attempt.
Jooste, 63, faced arrest alongside former colleague Stephanus Grobler following accusations of accounting fraud.
The developments came swiftly after Jooste was handed a substantial fine by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) for sharing misleading financial information from 2014 to 2017. The incident happened in a coastal area near Hermanus, near Cape Town, where Jooste was discovered in a critical state.
Once pivotal in Steinhoff’s expansion, Jooste faced serious allegations, including fraud and racketeering.
