Legendary video game hardware designer, Hideki Sato, widely known as the “father of Sega hardware,” has d!ed at 77
His passing was confirmed by Japanese gaming outlet Beep21, which honored his lasting impact on global gaming culture.

Sato began his career at Sega in 1971 and was instrumental in developing the company’s iconic hardware, from the early SG-1000 to systems that defined generations, including the Sega Master System, Mega Drive/Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast. His designs helped Sega become a leading force in both home consoles and arcade gaming during the 1980s and 1990s.
He later took on leadership roles at Sega, serving as director of Research & Development and eventually as company president from 2001 to 2003. Sato’s work bridged arcade technology and home gaming, leaving a legacy that continues to influence gamers worldwide.
Beep21 described him as “a truly great figure who shaped Japanese gaming history and captivated Sega fans all around the world,” adding that “the excitement and pioneering spirit of that era will remain forever in the hearts and memories of countless fans.”
Tributes are pouring in across the gaming community, as fans and industry figures remember the consoles and experiences Sato helped create, many of which defined childhoods and shaped decades of gaming culture.
