Kylian Mbappe scored his first European Championship goal, but France were unable to secure a win against already-eliminated Poland, finishing second in Group D

France needed a win to top the group, but Robert Lewandowski’s penalty in the 79th minute cancelled out Mbappe’s earlier spot-kick.
Despite a strong performance from Austria, who beat the Netherlands 3-2 to win the group, France will now face the runner-up in Group E in the knockout stages, joining a tough half of the draw alongside Portugal, Spain, and Germany.
Mbappe, wearing a protective mask after returning from a broken nose, opened the scoring with a penalty after Ousmane Dembele was fouled.
However, France’s complacency allowed Poland back into the game, with Dayot Upamecano’s clumsy challenge giving away a penalty that Lewandowski converted at the second attempt, after Mike Maignan’s initial save was ruled out due to encroachment.
