France will be without head coach Didier Deschamps for its final Group I match at the World Cup
The French Football Federation announced on Tuesday, June 23 that Deschamps has returned to France following the de.ath of his mother.
In his absence, assistant Guy Stephan will serve as Les Bleus’ interim coach for their game vs. Norway.
“The national team coach learned this morning of the death of his mother and will return to France to attend her funeral,” the French Football Federation said in a statement.
“In agreement with Philippe Diallo, president of the French Football Federation, who is currently at the France team’s base camp, Deschamps has entrusted assistant coach Guy Stephan with responsibility for leading the squad until his return.”
Deschamps has served as France’s national team coach since 2012 and led Les Bleus to the FIFA World Cup title in 2018. He also won a World Cup as a player with France in 1998.
