President Bola Tinubu on Thursday commenced a two-day visit to France, aiming to strengthen economic ties between the two nations
This visit marks France’s effort to expand its influence in English-speaking Africa, following setbacks with former allies on the continent.
French President, Emmanuel Macron welcomed President Tinubu at the historic Invalides Memorial Complex, marking the first official state visit by a Nigerian leader in over 20 years.
The two countries’ national anthems were played in the iconic courtyard, setting the tone for discussions focused on enhancing economic partnerships with Africa’s most populous nation.
Since his 2017 election, Macron has pushed for a “renewal” of France’s relationship with Africa, seeking to rebuild trust and influence amid shifting dynamics on the continent.
Macron’s office described the visit as “an opportunity to deepen the already dynamic relationship between France and Nigeria.”
According to Tinubu’s office, discussions will focus on collaboration in agriculture, security, education, health, youth engagement, innovation, and energy transition.
The statement also highlighted shared priorities in finance, solid minerals, trade, investment, and communication.
