A petrol and gas station on Edibe Edibe Street in Calabar South, Cross River State, exploded on Saturday, leaving multiple residents injured and causing extensive property damage
The facility, identified as Fonex Gas Station, was completely destroyed, including its fuel and gas storage tanks and several vehicles on site.

The blast, which occurred in a densely populated area, also damaged nearby shops and buildings, prompting residents and business owners to flee for safety. Several people sustained serious injuries; some received first aid at nearby patent medicine stores, while others were taken to hospitals for treatment.
At the time of reporting, neither the police nor the fire service had arrived, creating a security gap. This reportedly allowed looters to steal items from affected shops and the damaged station.
Thousands of residents gathered at the scene, some attempting to contain the fire using sand, water, and other improvised methods.
