Ghana’s National Sports Authority (NSA) has officially lifted the suspension on professional boxing, opening the door for major international events — including a possible Anthony Joshua fight next year
The ban was originally imposed after two tragic deaths in the sport within six months
At the time, the NSA said the move was necessary to protect athletes and reform the sport’s structure.
Since then, the authority has worked to improve safety measures, update its regulations, and strengthen administrative systems.
With the suspension now lifted, British promoter Eddie Hearn and his company, Matchroom, will host their first-ever boxing event in Ghana on December 20.
The show will take place at Legon Sports Stadium in Accra and will feature Craig Richards vs. Dan Azeez in the main bout, alongside heavyweight prospect Leo Atang and Indian boxer Nishant Dev.
The event will be broadcast live on DAZN.
According to Hearn, this December event will serve as a “precursor” to a potential Anthony Joshua fight in Ghana in 2026.
In a statement, the NSA said it is pleased with the “significant progress” made in addressing safety concerns and is encouraging both local and foreign promoters to invest in the sport’s revival.
Joshua, the two-time world heavyweight champion, is already back in training as he prepares for his return to the ring early next year.
