A 23-year-old hotel worker, Victoria Emmanuel, is receiving treatment for severe burns after she was allegedly attacked with boiling water by her colleague’s girlfriend in Kano
The incident occurred on November 10 at a residence in Kawo, where Victoria had gone after closing from work. She accompanied her colleague, 28-year-old Shadrach Michael, to pick up items for her upcoming birthday celebration. Shadrach reportedly suggested a brief stop at his apartment before they proceeded to the market.
According to Victoria’s sister, Rosemary Emmanuel, trouble began when Shadrach’s girlfriend, Chioma Michael, called to say she was visiting. Although Shadrach discouraged her from coming, Chioma allegedly arrived minutes later and met Victoria in the apartment.
Rosemary narrated that Chioma claimed she wanted to take a warm bath and began boiling water. When the gas finished, she borrowed more from a neighbour and continued heating it.
Moments later, she allegedly carried the pot and poured its contents on Victoria, burning her face, back, chest and hands.
Shadrach was said to have hit Chioma in shock as she fled, allegedly taking Victoria’s phone with her. Rosemary further claimed Victoria was locked inside the apartment for nearly five hours—from about 3:00 p.m. to nearly 8:00 p.m.—without medical attention.
The family later received a call from Victoria, who had been taken to Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital. She was subsequently transferred to a clinic in Nomansland due to the unavailability of a doctor.
The matter was reported at the Hotoro Police Division around midnight. Police arrested Chioma’s mother to compel the suspect to appear, and Chioma later turned herself in. The case has since been transferred to the Bompai Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Rosemary said the family has not decided on legal action, alleging that Chioma has shown no remorse. She also dismissed rumours of a relationship between Victoria and Shadrach, insisting they were only co-workers.
Victoria is still receiving treatment and is said to be responding well.
Meanwhile, a Magistrate Court sitting in Kawaji, Dakata, on Monday ordered Chioma’s remand at the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre till December 9.
