Gov. Umo Eno announces Double Salary for Akwa Ibom workers

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has assured that state employees will receive double salary payments in December

The governor also announced the introduction of a 13th-month salary, called ‘Eno-Mber,’ aimed at making the festive season more joyful for civil servants, particularly given the delay in implementing the new N80,000 minimum wage.

According to LEADERSHIP, the harmonization committee, chaired by the Head of the Civil Service, Elder Effiong Essien, may not meet the one-month deadline set by the state government for submitting its report. The committee now expects to complete its work by the first quarter of 2025.

To address the growing impatience among workers, Governor Eno made the announcement during a church service at Eternity Mission International Church in Uyo on Sunday, offering the double salary as temporary relief until the new wage is fully implemented.

“I am aware that quite a number of our civil servants have relocated within Nigeria, while others have gone abroad. We have to be sure that those receiving payments are real civil servants. My watchword since assuming office has been transparency and honesty in service delivery, and we have to ensure that we carry this through this verification exercise, which will soon be completed,” the governor said.

Governor Eno also cautioned those attempting to disrupt the harmonious relationship between the state government and organized labor, urging them to reconsider their actions. “Since we came in, we have paid critical attention to the needs and welfare of civil servants in this state. To date, we have paid N35 billion in gratuities to retired state, local government workers, and primary school teachers,” he added.

The governor further emphasized initiatives to promote good work ethics among civil servants, including the payment of a N1.1 billion bonus to all public servants, as well as the timely payment of salaries, pensions, and gratuities. Additionally, the governor released funds to ensure the prompt payment of wage awards for three months to help mitigate the effects of the high cost of living caused by the federal government’s fuel subsidy removal. He also announced the provision of 150 free homes at the Grace Estate for civil servants in grades one to eight.
