Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has pardoned 40 prison inmates as part of his administration’s commitment to justice reform and reintegration of convicts into society
Dr. Olukayode Ajulo (SAN), Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, announced the decision, highlighting the governor’s dedication to mercy and rehabilitation. Fifteen of the inmates were granted immediate release, effective Sunday, January 12, 2025, following recommendations by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
A statement titled “Aiyedatiwa Pardons 40 Prisoners to Celebrate 60th Birthday”, signed by Chief Press Secretary Ebenezer Adeniyan, revealed that some death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment, while others had sentences reduced.
Dr. Ajulo, who chairs the council, explained that the pardons were granted after careful deliberation, considering factors such as the nature of the offences, age, health, behavior, and duration of imprisonment.
“This compassionate act reflects Governor Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering commitment to justice sector reforms and to extending grace and mercy to deserving convicts,” he stated.
The gesture coincides with Governor Aiyedatiwa’s 60th birthday, but the governor opted to forgo celebrations in honor of the late Secretary to the State Government, Tayo Oluwatuyi (Tukana), who recently passed away.
The action aligns with Section 212 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers governors to exercise the prerogative of mercy. The council’s recommendations were guided by correctional authorities, legal experts, and community leaders to ensure fairness and compassion in the process.
