Abia State Governor Alex Otti has debunked widespread reports claiming he has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC)
Reacting to the speculation circulating on social media, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, described the story as a baseless fabrication by political opponents unsettled by the governor’s performance and rising popularity.

Kanu stressed that Governor Otti remains a proud and loyal member of the Labour Party, emphasizing that the rumours were aimed at distracting the public and creating unnecessary confusion.
“Governor Alex Otti remains a committed and proud member of the Labour Party, the platform under which the good people of Abia overwhelmingly elected him to serve,” the Commissioner said. “His focus remains unshaken — to rebuild Abia, restore accountability, and deliver the dividends of democracy to every citizen of the state.”
He recalled that only last week, during the October edition of Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians, the governor made it clear that his priorities lie in serving humanity and transforming Abia State, not in political scheming or defection.
Kanu further stated that the Otti administration continues to uphold transparency, fiscal discipline, infrastructure renewal, economic growth, youth empowerment, and good governance — all core principles of the Labour Party.
“These are values synonymous with the Labour Party’s ideals — values that the Governor will never compromise for political convenience,” he added.
The Commissioner urged residents to disregard the rumours, describing them as cheap propaganda from those desperate to divert attention from the steady progress being achieved under Otti’s leadership.
