More than 10 people were rescued on Saturday after a fatal crash on the Benin–Auchi highway, thanks to the prompt intervention of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo
The governor, who was en route to Irrua in Esan Central Local Government Area, encountered heavy traffic near the bypass and stepped down from his convoy to investigate.

According to Channels TV, Okpebholo arrived at the scene to find passengers severely injured, bleeding profusely, while onlookers stood by helplessly. He immediately instructed his aides to use two security Hilux trucks from his convoy to rush the victims to the nearest hospital.
Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred when a white Toyota Venza, registration number ABUJA GWA 50 AW, drove against traffic and collided with three fully loaded commercial buses. The crash caused multiple casualties and triggered a major gridlock.

The governor personally supervised the evacuation, ensuring each injured passenger—including a woman with deep wounds—was carried into the vehicles for urgent treatment. He remained at the site until all the victims had been transported under security escort before continuing his journey.

Motorists and residents commended Okpebholo’s swift response, which they said saved lives. As of press time, neither the Federal Road Safety Corps nor the Edo State Government had released an official statement on the incident.
