Governor Uzodinma sacks state's Attorney General

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has dismissed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Cyprian O.C. Akaolisa, with immediate effect

The announcement was made on Monday, May 26, 2025, by the Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, who directed Akaolisa to hand over all government property in his possession to the State Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice.

Although no official reason was given for the dismissal, it follows closely on the heels of the removal of the state’s Chief Judge, Theophilus Nzeukwu, over irregularities in his appointment—raising speculation that Uzodinma is undertaking a broader shake-up of the state’s judicial leadership.

Akaolisa, a long-serving member of Uzodinma’s cabinet and a key political ally, had previously faced a five-year suspension by the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee in 2021 for alleged misconduct. The Supreme Court overturned that suspension in April 2025.

As of now, no replacement has been announced.
