A gunman who opened fire at a security checkpoint near the White House was shot de.ad by officers after a dramatic confrontation on Saturday evening
According to the US Secret Service, the suspect approached the checkpoint shortly after 6pm local time, pulled a firearm from his bag and began shooting at officers stationed there.
The suspect, identified by law enforcement officials as 21-year-old Nasire Best, was shot by officers who returned fire during the incident. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later confirmed de.ad.

Authorities also revealed that a bystander was critically injured during the exchange. Officials said it remains unclear whether the victim was struck by bullets fired by the suspect or by return fire from officers.
The Secret Service confirmed that none of its personnel were hurt and stated that President Donald Trump, who was inside the White House at the time, was not affected by the shooting.
Reacting on his Truth Social account, Trump praised the Secret Service and other law enforcement agents for their “swift and professional action,” while also claiming the suspect had a “violent history.”
