Suspected gunmen have reportedly issued a new threat to Saint Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State — nearly three years after a d3adly attack at the same church left many worshippers d3ad and several others injured
The fresh warning has rekindled fear and anxiety in the town, as residents recall the horrific events of June 5, 2022, when armed men stormed the church during a Sunday Mass, unleashing chaos and bloodshed.
With memories of that tragedy still fresh, the new threat has sparked urgent concerns over the safety and security of the area.
In response, the traditional ruler of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye, has called for a security summit aimed at addressing the growing insecurity and preventing a recurrence.
Scheduled for Monday, May 26, the summit will bring together key stakeholders to chart a path toward lasting peace and safety in Owo and surrounding communities.
According to organizers, the event will focus on fostering stronger collaboration between residents and security agencies, while also developing long-term strategies to combat rising crime.
One of the key proposals on the agenda is the establishment of a Security Trust Fund, designed to support efforts to safeguard lives and property across the region.
Organizers say recent threats from suspected bandits and a spike in kidnapping cases have severely disrupted daily life and economic activity in the town.
The summit will be attended by prominent figures, including Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and his deputy, Dr. Olayide Owolabi Adelami. Justice Adesuyi Olateru-Olagbegi will chair the session, with Hon. Tope Omolayo, chairman of Owo Local Government, serving as chief host. Pastor Olugbenga Olumolawa chairs the planning committee, while Prof. Taiwo Adenegan will anchor the event.
All major security agencies, traditional leaders, and relevant stakeholders are expected to participate in the summit as the town seeks collective solutions to the threats facing its people.
