A marital dispute has reached the courts in Ilorin as Kafayat Ajoke files for divorce from her husband, Aminullahi Ibrahim, citing financial strain following his job loss.
The case, heard on Friday, highlights the economic pressures faced by many families and their impact on marital relationships.
Ajoke appealed to the court to dissolve her marriage and grant her custody of their two children. She also requested a monthly maintenance and feeding allowance of N100,000 from Ibrahim. Explaining her decision, Ajoke stated, “I noticed a change in my husband after he lost his job a year ago. He has not been able to provide adequate funds for our family’s food.”
In response, Ibrahim agreed to the divorce but contested the maintenance amount. Given his current unemployment, he proposed a monthly payment of N2,000, significantly less than his wife’s request. Ibrahim explained to the court, “I am without a job and therefore do not have sufficient funds. This is the primary reason why my wife is seeking a divorce.”
Judge Idris Etsu, presiding over the case, heard arguments from both parties. The next hearing is scheduled for July 30, when the judge is expected to deliver his verdict.
