Former Ekiti State Governor and newly appointed Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Ayodele Fayose, has linked Nigeria’s population growth to the country’s poor electricity supply
Fayose made the statement on Friday in Abuja during his inauguration as chairman of the REA governing board. His appointment by President Bola Tinubu was part of a wider set of appointments to federal agencies announced in July.
Speaking about the need to improve electricity access, Fayose argued that the lack of power leaves many people with little to do after nightfall, particularly in communities where darkness sets in early.
He said inadequate electricity supply encourages people to retire to their homes earlier because there are limited alternatives for entertainment or social activities after dark.
The REA chairman suggested that improving electricity supply would not only power homes and businesses but also create opportunities for nightlife and other activities outside the home.
He said: “When you don’t address the issue of electricity, by 7 o’clock it gets dark, and people start engaging with their wives, so the population doubles.”
“The simple problem is that, because there is no electricity, people go to bed early. Their minds are already prepared for it. If this is the only option available, they simply stay at home,”
“But if we address the electricity problem, there will be nightlife,”
