A tragic incident unfolded at Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital in Alabama on Sunday night when a 19-year-old man allegedly shot his 24-year-old wife before taking his own life, just hours after she delivered their first child
Police say Kynath Terry Jr. opened fire on Precious Johnson around 9:30 p.m., according to WTVM 13. After shooting Johnson, he turned the gun on himself.
Both were pronounced dead, and authorities confirmed they were the only two people injured in the shooting. It has not been confirmed whether the newborn baby was inside the hospital room when the gunshots rang out.
Johnson had successfully given birth to a healthy child shortly before the violence erupted. Investigators are still piecing together the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation.
Terry’s mother revealed that the young couple had been struggling with marital issues in the weeks leading up to Johnson’s due date. Despite the tension, she said she never imagined the situation would spiral into violence. She also disclosed that her son had completed training with the Army National Guard prior to their marriage.
According to her account, Johnson had requested that Terry’s relatives not be present at the hospital during the delivery. It remains unclear whether any of Johnson’s own family members were at the facility.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, hospital administrators enforced a lockdown “out of an abundance of caution” while officers secured the premises. The lockdown lasted several hours until authorities confirmed there was “no active threat to patients, team members or the public.”
The Homewood Police Department described the case as “an apparent murder-suicide and is domestic in nature.”
Reacting to the tragedy, Alabama Hospital Association President Danne Howard called the event “an isolated incident,” noting it was unlike anything she had encountered in her three decades within the state’s healthcare system. She said Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital would conduct a review of its security measures and implement “lessons learned” identified in a mandatory after-action report.
