Speaking over the weekend in Katsina State, the president admitted that he became so discouraged by the situation that he almost stopped reading newspapers.

“When we started, it was challenging, and I almost ran away from watching or reading the newspapers,” Tinubu said. “I got discouraged and stayed put on my decisions, believing that the ability of a leader to take decisions at the right time is the hallmark of leadership. We took it and stayed with it, and it will be rewarding — it’s already bearing fruits.”

He assured Nigerians that the economic situation is now improving, stating, “Nigeria is a success, the economy is turning around, it has bent the corner.”

Meanwhile, outgoing President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina, expressed concern over Nigeria’s dwindling GDP per capita. Speaking at the 20th anniversary dinner of investment firm Chapel Hill Denham in Lagos, Adesina noted that countries like South Korea and other Asian economies, which were once on par with Nigeria in terms of GDP per capita, have now far outpaced it.

He attributed the setback to a lack of focused economic planning and poor implementation by successive Nigerian governments. “More Nigerians are now poor than they were at Independence in 1960,” Adesina said, calling for urgent reforms to position Nigeria as the economic powerhouse of Africa.
