Peter Obi has reiterated that, unlike most Nigerian politicians, he does not make promises he cannot keep — insisting his pledge to serve only one term if elected president remains non-negotiable

In a statement on Sunday, the former Labour Party presidential candidate admitted Nigerians are justified in doubting political commitments, considering the history of many leaders.
He emphasised, however, that his own political path has always been founded on integrity and accountability.
“They are judging me by their own standards — where political promises are made to be broken. But they forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth.”
According to him, four years is more than enough to deliver purposeful leadership, referencing leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy and Nelson Mandela, who made lasting impacts within short periods in office.
“If elected, I will not spend a day longer than four years in office. In fact, I believe that service should be impactful, not eternal.”
The former Anambra State governor argued that sticking to a single term was a principled stand against the pattern of African leaders prolonging their stay in power.
Reflecting on his time in office, he pointed to achievements in education, healthcare and infrastructure, saying he managed public resources responsibly.
“In my political life, my word is my bond. When I entered politics in Anambra State, I made clear and measurable promises to the people… I fulfilled each of those promises without deviation.”
Responding to recent comments implying anyone proposing a single-term presidency requires psychiatric examination, he argued such statements expose the dysfunction of Nigeria’s political system rather than his own intentions.
“If making such a promise qualifies me for psychiatric evaluation, then we may as well question the mental fitness of those who framed our Constitution, which clearly stipulates a four-year renewable tenure.”
Outlining his key priorities if elected, he listed tackling insecurity, strengthening education and healthcare, empowering small businesses, fighting corruption and transforming Nigeria into a production-based economy.
“These are not utopian dreams. They are realistic, actionable goals that are achievable within four years. A new Nigeria is POssible.”
