Former Nigerian military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has disclosed that he was receiving treatment at the same London hospital as the late President Muhammadu Buhari prior to Buhari’s de.ath
Buhari d!ed on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82 following a brief illness.
Speaking to Channels Television, Abubakar, who is 83 and was recently reported to be managing an undisclosed ailment, confirmed he had already been discharged when Buhari passed.
“Unfortunately, we were in the hospital together, but I had been discharged,” Abubakar said. “When I heard the news of his passing, I quickly went there to condole with the family and help with arrangements to transport his remains back home.”
Recalling their long-standing relationship, Abubakar said, “My relationship with Buhari goes as far back as 1962. We joined the military the same year. He was my senior. During the civil war, we fought in the same sector. Gen. Buhari was a quiet gentleman, but incredibly honest. You could trust him with anything—he would never betray you.”
Abubakar described Buhari’s de.ath as “a big blow to Nigeria,” noting that President Tinubu had dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to accompany the late president’s remains back to the country.
“With Buhari’s passing, politics in Nigeria will certainly change—I hope for the better,” he said.
Buhari is scheduled to be buried on Tuesday, July 15, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
