Opeyemi Famakin, a prominent food critic, has shared a startling experience that has led him to vow silence about his finances

In a recent interview with Chude Jideonwo, Famakin disclosed that he received an unexpected N80 million tax bill from the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) just hours after publicly revealing his income.
Famakin recounted that the tax authority contacted him via email within 48 hours of his financial revelation, suggesting that his public statement had triggered their attention.
He jokingly mentioned that he promptly paid the bill, but the experience has left him cautious about discussing his finances in the future.
“Two days after I mentioned my finances, LIRS sent me an email, they billed me N80 million, I paid it o. It was like play.
“However, I would never talk about my finances again. Even though I told them ‘allegedly,’ they said no, but let’s not discuss it. I’m now a proud tax payer.”
This incident comes after Famakin sparked online debate in 2022 by claiming to be Nigeria’s highest-paid food critic, earning N9 million in a bad week.
