Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has confirmed that he will run again in 2027 on the LP platform

He made the declaration in a 7-minute, 16-second video shared on the party’s WhatsApp platform on Saturday, while addressing a group of young supporters.
Obi attributed the internal crises in both the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to interference by the ruling government. “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government, quote me anywhere,” he stated.
He recalled a similar issue during the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, saying, “We had a problem in our party before. Yar’Adua called the INEC Chairman and told him he didn’t want any problem in any party. We were forced to fix it.”
Addressing questions about his commitment to the party, Obi said, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”
He also emphasized the importance of strong opposition for a functional democracy, vowing to reform the political system if given the chance. “Parties will function very well because you can’t have a system working without a strong opposition,” he said.
Obi urged Nigerians to take responsibility for ensuring their votes count, stressing that voters—not party agents—hold the real power in elections.
Encouraging the youth and general electorate not to lose hope, he warned that meaningful change will be resisted by those who benefit from the status quo.
He also suggested that there should be a retirement age for political office seekers, revealing that he would be 65 by the time of the 2027 election and would prefer not to contest into his 70s.
