The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dared Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, over his unannounced visits to the state

Speaking on Thursday during a visit to his alma mater, Christ the King College (CKC) in Onitsha, Obi stated that he has no fear about visiting Edo or any other state in Nigeria, especially when the visit is aimed at promoting national development.

“I am not afraid of visiting any state in Nigeria, particularly when the purpose is to support causes that contribute to nation building, such as education, health, and poverty alleviation,” he declared.

His comment follows a controversial statement by Governor Okpebholo, who on July 18 warned that Obi’s security would not be guaranteed if he visited Edo without prior notification.

“He cannot come to Edo without telling me. A new Sheriff is in town. His security cannot be guaranteed,” the governor said. “We are serious about it. Whatever happens to him when he comes to Edo State, he will take it.”

Okpebholo claimed Obi’s last visit to Benin led to unrest and fatalities, saying, “He came the other day and donated N15 million. By the time he left after donating the money, there was a crisis, and three people died in Benin.”

Reacting to those claims, Obi insisted his visit to Benin was strictly to support healthcare development and had no political undertone.

“Threats don’t make any meaning to me. I receive threats every day. Actually, the ones you know about were just vocal, but I will not be afraid,” he said.

He also expressed disappointment that his gesture was politicised, asserting that his mission was simply to uplift lives.

“If I have the opportunity to go to Benin and make donations again, trust me, I will. I have always said that we should de-emphasise politics and think more of how to invest in the people,” he added. “I went to Benin to invest in people because if they have good doctors and good nurses, they will have a better life. What I expect the governor to do is to complement efforts aimed at improving society.”

During his visit to CKC Onitsha, Obi donated N50 million to support the school’s infrastructure and promote educational growth. The cheque was received by Archbishop Valerian Okeke, who commended Obi and fellow alumni for their commitment to education and national progress.

The school’s senior prefect, Ejike Ekene, also thanked Obi, describing him as a role model and inspiration to students.
